Archival material

The Chronological limits and the range of sources
of the Archive (at the end of 1998)

The Archive gathers records from 1291-1999. Its resources consist of over 1 500 units containing 3 058 running metres of files divided into 310 195 single items.

One of the most interesting items among the archive resources are so called special collections containing: collection of maps, mainly from so called Galician Cadastre with over 3 000 archival units, collection of placards, posters and material printed on leaflets – from Przemyśl and outside the town, collection of photographs and manuscripts of scientific and literary works. The most precious and often worked out by historians are besides the Old Polish archivalias the records of denominational institutions. The biggest and the richest set contains documents from the archive of the Greek Catholic bishopric showing chronologically the files since the end of 13th century till liquidation in 1946 the diocese of the Byzantine-Ukrainian denomination. Still more and more worked out not only by historians, but also by demographers and genealogists are the public register of the Greek Catholic denomination from several decanates of Przemysl eparchy as well as highly incomplete baptismal certificates of Jewish and Evangelical parishes, and those from Roman Catholic parishes. Very helpful for research work are also rich materials of notarial offices from former Galicia used now mainly in querendas related to property, inheritance and compensation. Those documents contain important information regarding economic history, they may also be useful in sociological and demographical research as they contain information about professional and nationalistic structure of population and say also about earning emigration of people from Galicia. They testify also property of the known families like Czartoryski, Lubomirski, Mniszech, Ossoliński, Potocki, Poniński, Raczyński, Romer, Tarnowski.

The database has been prepared for the searchers and the care about its technical and essential quality has been done by the Main Centre of Archival Information by the General Directorate of State Archives in Warsaw. Now, the Archive in Przemyśl has to its disposal three all-Poland databases containing archivalias stored in all archives all over the country. They are as follows: SEZAM containing the evidence of all archival sets from several archives, ELA – containing documents about evidence of citizens – and PRADZIAD containing the public register and files of Register of all denominations stored in the state archives. Especially these last documents are very important for those living at present in USA, Canada, Ukraine, Israel, France, Germany and other countries world-wide – looking for their genealogical roots. Computers help archivists to prepare directories containing huge parts of archival material. The Archive in Przemyśl co-ordinate the work on project regarding the international database about maps of so called Galician cadastre; the special summary publication will be issued afterwards. Archives from Poland and Ukraine work on that idea collecting materials regarding this subject. The biggest collection of cadastre maps and auxiliary materials is – except the Archive in Przemyśl – stored in the State Archive in Cracow and in the Central State Historical Archive of Ukraine in Lwów.
